Consider this new anthem for Pentecost Sunday. The floating piano introduction gently descends to illustrate the title phrase. Unison women ask of God’s mercy and love. Unison men answer, seeking a burning heart filled with the Spirit. Divided voices complete the stanza. A modulation into G major returns the opening material, now set for unison choir, with text seeking spiritual growth to be made “more like God’s Son.”
The accompaniment is straightforward with no difficult key signatures and some accidentals. Both the choral and piano parts include quarter note triplets. Take care not to rush this recurring rhythm. Vocal parts are accessible and present no direct challenges.
Performance options include singing the opening section, measures 5 through 16 as two solos, with tutti choir entering in measure 17. The concluding section, measure 36 to the end, may be used as a brief benediction. The anthem may be used as a call to confession, a response to the assurance of pardon, or as an independent anthem.
Appropriate days: Service themes on the Holy Spirit; personal and/or corporate revival; Pentecost; and general worship.
