Jesus in Jerusalem Download. This is for the free leader materials.
In his final days, which we call Holy Week, Jesus went to Jerusalem to teach people through his words and actions just how much God loves us and to show people what it means to follow God. The stories about the events of the last days of Jesus’ life take up large portions of each Gospel. In this unit the events of Holy Week are presented according to the timeline used in the Gospel of Mark,
This unit recalls the events of Holy Week as a journey, Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem to the cross and the Resurrection. Each event is presented in light of how that event served as a step in Jesus’ journey to the cross that began long before Holy Week. To see this, consider the Bible verse chosen to represent the heart of the lesson: “Not long before it was time for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51, CEV).
In this unit for Lent children will learn how the events of Holy Week teach us more about Jesus and what it means to follow God. They will recognize that Jesus’ life teaches us about God’s love for us. Along the way, they will connect the stories from the Gospels with the traditional Holy Week celebrations in the church today.
