Main Idea: The Bible is the special book of our faith and contains God's teachings that help us know how God wants us to live. Unit Description: The Deuteronomy passage, known as the Shema, calls us to "love God with all our heart, soul, and might." In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus repeated the Shema, as being the most important commandment, and then added second commandment, "to love your neighbor as yourself." The Beatitudes, found in Matthew 5, are not commandments but rather a description of what is good, or "blessed," in God's eyes. Scriptures: Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Matthew 5:1-12, Matthew 22:37-39 Children will: - learn that, when we read the Bible, we can discover what God expects us to do and be;
- explore the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) and its importance;
- examine the Beatitudes and their meaning;
- study Christ's commandment to "love our neighbor as ourselves";
- be challenged to think about ways Jesus' teachings were very radical and new.
