Throughout John's Gospel, Jesus makes 7 "I am" statements. These are claims of identity that give Jesus's original disciples and us today insight into who He is and what He came to do. In each statement, He makes an implicit claim to be one in essence and character with the God of Israel. In each statement, He shows us His character and teaches us about His nature. He asks us to believe in Him and trust that He is who He says He is. He is one with God the Father. A shepherd who will lead us and protect us. Truth we can trust above all else. Light from heaven. Bread of life. A vine from which we can grow and bear fruit. And water to satisfy our thirsty souls.
